Upper West Side

History

The Lenape Native American tribe first discovered the Upper West Side. The sandy coves of the North River often provided the travel routes needed by the Lenapes. The Munsee Indians also lived on the north end of Manhattan. When the Dutch tried to settle in the Upper West Side in the 1650s, this was met with resistance from the Munsee Indians. After much warfare between the Dutch and Munsee Indians, the Dutch were left with a small parcel of land known as Bloemendal. Today, this is known as the Bloomingdale District.

After these settlements were made, history continued being created in the Upper West Side. In 1776, the War of Independence even held one of its battles in the Upper West Side. The Battle of Harlem Heights was fought, however, is known to this day for its strategic unimportance.

During the 1800s, the Upper West Side became home to wealthy estate owners with massive mansions. When Central Park was created, this forced low income tenants further west of the city. As real estate continued being developed in the Upper West Side, many wealthier people continued migrating to this area of New York City.

Columbia University moved to the East Side in the 1890s, which brought a new intellectual life to the Upper West Side as well. To this day, the Upper West Side is now home to intellectuals, affluent families, and wealthy young professionals.
