West Village

History

The West Village in Manhattan used to be called Little Bohemia in the early 1900’s. Today if you say Greenwich Village, you will find the West Village of New York City. Long before New York City organized a traffic flow later in the 18th century, the West Village had been established, hence the smaller than standard street widths placed with consideration of their juxtaposition to the river views and breezes. New York University, artists and musicians and the Meatpacking industry make up the delightful atmosphere that is the West Village.

Description

The West Village is bordered by the new and improved Houston Street on the southern end and 14th towards the north with 6th Avenue to the east and the Hudson River creating the western edge. Technically, the western portion of this is truly the West Village of the larger neighborhood known as Greenwich Village. The West Village of NYC can be remember for its quaint tree lined streets, charming row houses, and scenic city walking terrain.

Residents

West Village NYC apartment rentals are taken over by the New York University students on the east side of the West Village neighborhood. There are also many families with small kids in the numerous West Village townhomes, which although small are deep and provide that rare 3rd bedroom. Students of all nationalities and ages and families are what you will see as you enjoy this beautiful walk back to Manhattan’s 19th century.

Rental Housing

West Village NYC apartment rentals and townhomes begin as low as $1500 on MacDougal Street for a studio. Anyone relocating to this part of Manhattan will be even happier to hear that a 3 bedroom West Village townhome rental can be found for under $6000 per month. Take a look at 11th Street for larger West Village NYC rentals in newer or refurbished buildings. Although this locale is known for its quaint homes there are plenty of apartment rentals in clean, attractive buildings loaded with amenities.

Fun Stuff

Meatpacking is an industry infamous for its place in film lore and mythical attraction to crime syndicate families. Gansevoort Market opened in the early 1900’s and again today is home to this essential industry for all New York City residents. It is a reclaimed historic district and worth a visit; Emeril Live has his studio on the edge of this must see district. Also the High Line, once an elevated railroad track is now a greenway open to the public to walk and enjoy views of the Hudson unavailable prior to 2009. Any West Village NYC neighborhood guide will also remind you to catch a show at one of the old theaters in this part of town. All are worth a visit for their fringe fare and historical significance.
