HistoryThe combined neighborhoods of Bedford/Stuyvesant are located within the New York City borough, Brooklyn. The name Stuyvesant comes from the name of the first governor of the New Netherlands colony, Peter Stuyvesant. One of Brooklyn's first communities was Bedford and the population really started increasing after the Brooklyn and Jamaica railroad, which later became the Long Island Railroad in 1836, was completed. This area became one of the oldest communities of free African Americans in the United States and much of it is still kept intact for its historicity today. It later became home to the white and blue collar workers as they could now get to their downtown Manhattan jobs easier with the building of the elevated trains throughout the community. This change caused the destruction of the original houses which were replaced with the more popular row houses. World War II brought with it many neighborhood problems, such as crime, problems within governmental leadership, and the disappearance of many public services, causing it to become a more ghetto like atmosphere which it stayed through the 1960's and 1970's. DescriptionIt wasn't until the beginning of the 21st century that the nature of the neighborhood began to change. As the crime rates started decreasing, due to higher police involvement and less drugs being available, families began looking at the beautiful brownstone and limestone rowhouses on the quiet streets lined with mature trees as potential places in which to raise their families. It is now considered to be one of New York City's safer communities as the crime rate has been steadily declining. The influx of middle class Americans brought with it a need for more commercial and retail centers which has also led to more jobs in the area as well as the need for more bicycle and walking paths within the neighborhood. ResidentsThe latest census poll has the population of Bedford/Stuyvesant at 142,058, the majority of which are of African-American and Caribbean descent. The average age of the residents in the neighborhood is 32, with the majority being singles or unmarried parents with children. With the incomes averaging from $25,000 to $44,000, it is comprised of mostly low to working class citizens most of whom live in Bedford rentals or Stuyvesant rentals. The constantly changing demographics lead to many different Bedford apartments for rent monthly. Rental HousingWhether you desire a condo, an apartment, or a house there are always many bedford rentals or Stuyvesant rentals available.
