History


Settlement of the Midwood New York area began back in 1652 by the Dutch. It got its name from a Dutch word that meant “middle woods” and was given to it because of the massive amount of dense trees in the area. It was not developed very much until it became part of the city of New York in 1898. During the 1920s the area began to grow because of apartment buildings that were built as well as middle-class housing.

The area saw a decline during the 1970s as many people moved out of the city and this hurt the business in the area. It wasn't until the 1980s that people started to move back into the area of all different nationalities.

Description


This area is very well known for its past with movies and television. It's been part of several different films as well as several different popular TV shows. Some of these include the Cosby show and the popular daytime television show ‘As The World Turns’. It has access to both the New York subway line as well as the bus system and this makes it easy for residents to get around. The area is occupied by many Jewish residents as it is considered to be a predominately Jewish neighborhood. You can also find the Roman Catholic Church, Greek Orthodox Church, and Episcopal Church there.
