Queens/Long Island City

History Long Island City was once home to Native Americans who traveled the East river with their canoes. During the 1640s Dutch colonist settled and farmed the area. A decade later William Hallet Sr. bought the land from the Native Americans. During the early 1800s turned the area into a village and named it Astoria. In 1870 Astoria became charter as Long Island City. In 1869 it officially became part of New York City. Description Today Long Island City is a vibrant part of the borough of Queens.
