HistoryIn 1831, a young lawyer named Sam Ruggles purchased the property that now makes up Gramercy and Gramercy Park. Before his purchase of the land, Gramercy was once only a swamp called "Crommashie" by the Dutch. With the directorship of Sam Ruggles, the entire swamp making up Gramercy was drained and created into the beautiful area that has now survived. The vision of Sam Ruggles was to create an open air area that could be enjoyed by city residents that lived in the crowded city. In 1845, there were only two homes located in 1845. However, Ruggles continued investing in the area and kept building residential communities. He knew that one day many city residents would want to live in Gramercy for its beautiful gardens and park.
