History


Like other areas of Manhattan, Hudson Heights was once occupied by the Lenape Indians during the seventeenth century. In 1626, the area making up Hudson Heights was sold for 60 Dutch Gilders in a deal involving Peter Minuit. Later, Hudson Heights was the scene of many battles that took place during the American Revolutionary War. Unfortunately, the British held the upper hand throughout the battles.

After the Revolutionary War ended, many Irish immigrants came to Hudson Heights during the mid-twentieth century. Throughout the early 1900s, Hudson Heights continued to be settled by immigrants. The Hungarians and Poles soon followed the Irish during the war. Many Jewish families also came to Hudson Heights in order to escape persecution in Germany.

Hudson Heights continues to be a mainly residential area to this day. Many of the buildings in Hudson Heights were created before World War II.

Hudson Heights is full of buildings which are classified as "Art Deco" today. These are pre-war buildings created in the 1920s and 1930s. There are very few condos and condominiums in Hudson Heights.
