History


Inwood is located at the northernmost tip of Manhattan. During the seventeenth century, the Lenape Indian tribe lived in Inwood. Inwood was often used as fishing grounds by the Native Americans.

The Dutch first settled in Inwood in 1783. Inwood was used mostly as farmland during this time period. Today, one of the original Dutch farm houses still stands today. A family named the Dyckmans built the farm house, and it is the only surviving Dutch farm house in the area. During the American Revolution, Inwood was overtaken by the British.

In 1908, Inwood enjoyed a nice demand in its real estate market. The population of Inwood was rapidly increasing, and the value of homes soared. Even during the Great Depression and World War II, the economy in Inwood remained very stable.

During the late 1960s, Inwood experienced a mass immigration of Dominicans. Later, in the 1980s, many Irish immigrants came to Inwood. Throughout the 1990s, Inwood became a great area of rich culture. Musicians, artists, and writers have flocked to Inwood in droves. The culture of Inwood continues to thrive to this day.

The Cloisters are definitely worth visiting, as they are one of the most revered parts of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
