HistoryIn the 1800s, Sutton was established by a man with a fortune from the California Gold Rush of 1849. The man, Effingham B. Sutton, rebuilt Sutton in 1875. His fortune from the California Gold Rush enabled him to build brownstone homes between 57th Street and 58th Street. While he held a great vision for the residential community, it ultimately turned into an area filled with gangs and violence. In 1920, the Vanderbilts and Morgans were able to save Sutton Place. With its revival, Sutton Place transformed into an area for the wealthy and elite in society. In 1938, a highway was build by the government called Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive. Residents of Sutton Place lost access to the East River, so the government built private backyards for them to replace this lost access. Today, there are a total of five parks that make up Sutton Place. Sutton Place continues to be a highly south-after place for the wealthy in NYC and even the world.
