TriBeCa

History

The area now known as Tribeca was first settle by the Dutch in the 1620’s. In 1625, Manhattan Island was chosen as the location of Fort Amsterdam. Manhattan was officialy bought form the Lenape Indians in 1626. According to legend the purchase price amounted to a total of 24 dollars, the actual amount would in fact today be closer to one thousand dollars. In 1664, the English conquered Manhattan Island renaming the area New York. The area that would become Tribeca was one of the first to be developed into a proper city. Its heritage as the oldest part of the city can still be seen in its twisting streets; lower Manhattan is the only area of the city not constructed on a grid pattern. Many people are attracted the Tribeca townhomes that line these narrow twisty cobblestone streets.

This area grew over the next two centuries to become a finical center for the growing city. In the 1910’s this growth began to boom as the subways were expanded thorough out the city. However by the 1960’s the boom had turned to bust and the area was left full of abandoned warehouses and commercial space.

What was a bust for business was a boom for the arts as the cost of Tribeca rentals plummeted. Artists began moving in. Tribeca housing now became artists’ spaces.

The area today known as Tribeca spent most of its history as an unnamed section of Lower Manhattan. Tribeca is actually an acronym standing for "Triangle Below Canal Street". It was not until the 1970’s that ,after seeing the success of the residents of SoHo had in getting a neighborhood officially recognized that the residents of Tribeca began the process for themselves. Originally the name was meant to only refer to a one block area; however a fortunate typo by a local writer extend the neighborhood to include most of the West Side of Lower Manhattan.
